Yesterday I made the switch to Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm not looking back,
thanks Derek.

To add to your comments, compared to Anaconda the installation process
is messy.

Unlike with Fedora, my 570GTX Nvidia was not seen by the nouveau driver
from the installation CD, and Ubuntu 12.04 (unlike Fedora) doesn't have
a "Basic Graphic Mode" to perform the installation with. You have to
press the F6 key in the first splash screen and select "nomodeset" to be
able to do so - this as per instructions from Steve when I bought this
machine. Later I used the guidelines from this link:

http://www.noobslab.com/2011/09/nvidia-drivers-for-ubuntu-1110-oneiric.html

to install the Nvidia drivers. It just works.

The graphic part was not the most annoying. What was most annoying was
that (unlike with Fedora) to encrypt the entire disk during installation
you have to use the alternate installation disk. But even then, if you
use the "Guided - use entire disk" option to create the partitions and
then encrypt them, the installation stops dead with an error saying that
an error occurred and the installation cannot proceed further. The
reason is that there is no /boot partition created. So you have to
create all partitions by hand and then encrypt them, save the /boot one.

And after the installation is finished, the boot sequence is messy too,
with requests for passphrases within the text gibberish scrolling on the
screen.

However, after all these hurdles are overcome, the end result has a nice
polished look. Unity is something worth looking at, and the cube in
Compiz is working, together with all other effects, no hitch. The themes
do look better - you can see when a menu is open and where a window
frame finish and another one begins - and don't crash. And both pulse
and alsa sounds work as they should right "out of the box", including
for skype. Unlike on Fedora.

There is a small matter of some warnings and errors at boot time, but
that's a subject for another thread.

Cheers,
Adrian
