Use lsmod and compare with that of a known working box. MTU settings should never cause a panic?!???? I can't think of anything else software related that you wouldn't have already checked. I would aim at trying replacement hardware next. A large number of identical boxes running fine and this one pooping itself looks like a strong hint to me. Memory isn't the only silicon failing in a computer, though may be one of the most common ones. Try getting the inside temperature of the box, maybe it's overheating (also a HW fault).
