The power network operates at 50Hz (and 175Hz for ripple control in
Christchurch). Ethernet over power would work well into the MHz.
Interference there could come from many sources - electric motors
(fridge!) and switch mode supplies being the top ones. None of that has
to do with bad power wiring or old switchboards. One exception I can
think of: bad connections may conceivably cause small arcing, which
creates radio interference. You have bigger problems than Internet in
that case: the connection heats up and there is a fire risk. If you
notice a socket getting warm, investigate.
