A quick update to say that no luck with a live CD, I tried Ubuntu 14.04, Mint 16 & 17 and Fedora 20 & 21 But after I migrated the PC on Fedora 21 all seems to work now. Did the udev rules for device name and so far no problems. Thanks again for all the help.
