Just a comment on the USB3 while I'm thinking of this...

I've had no end of trouble with my desktop ASUS motherboard and the
onboard USB3, as you describe..  Lockups, poor throughput etc.  I've
tried a couple of different NEC chipset PCI cards and got similar, or no
results.

With the NUC, and two different haswell Intel boards with onboard USB3
I've tried it just works, and does so reliably day in, day out for
multiple TB of data transfers.

I'm replacing my M/B in a few weeks and going back to Intel, after being
an AMD fan for years.  Dunno what the actual issue is but I'm officially
over Googling 'USB3 Linux', messing about with custom kernel modules and
twatting about with firmware updating PCI cards.
