Check out the linux-utf8 archive for an interesting discussion on
why Commonwealth English should be preferred

In that discussion, Robert Brady claimed that there are no common
cases where one Commonwealth English word maps to different American
English words. But there are many counterexamples to this claim,
e.g., Commonwealth English "lift" maps to American English "lift" and
"elevator". For more on this subject please see H.L. Mencken's
classic book _The American Language_.

If the code's maintainer prefers Commonwealth English then I suppose
it should be his call, but my suggestion would be to stick to the Unix
tradition of American English message IDs, as it simplifes the
translator's job if the source language is standardized. American
English is clearly the standard now, and changing this would be more
trouble than it's worth.
