I can agree with that.  The basic idea is that if you edit a file and save it
under another name, you get an exact copy of the file.  Only when making
changes in the text may malformed sequences be removed, and only those near to
the change.

Try out the new Vim version 6.0c.  It keeps malformed sequences.  Displaying
them isn't working well though.  I could use some suggestions on how to do
that.  Perhaps it's best to display each malformed byte with a special
character?
