Further investigation has shown the following issue -
1. get a file which contains a page of singlewidth characters followed
by a page of doublewidth ones
2. scroll up with PgUp
3. try to select something. Note how it only lets you select two
characters at once
This means the selection code isn't taking the scroll into effect.
