The life-time of a CD-ROM is over a hundred years. The existing formats won't
die out. Their use will go down, but never to zero percent. I would be very
disappointed if support for my shelve full of CD-ROMs was dropped.

Does ISO 13346 store file names with Unicode? That sounds like a good
solution. Hopefully this avoids that yet another format will be introduced
later.

Floppy disks are currently used because they have a standard (FAT) format.
Changing this would break the purpose they are used for, it won't happen.
Several attempts have been done to introduce a new floppy (-like) medium
(backwards compatible), but none of them have been successful.
A new filesystem on the same 1.4M floppy format has the same
problem as introducing a new physical medium. I don't see it happening.
The rewritable CD-ROM looks like a good candidate, but there is not one format
that everybody supports, thus then we're back to the filesystem format
problems.
