OK. No messages are reported other than:
usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device <unnamed> (046d:0992)
For what it's worth, I can change the uniformly black picture to various
uniform shades of grey by
adjusting the brightness and contrast controls. And yes, I have raised the lens
shutter cover ;-).
