I have to finally correct my statement! The reason why my webcam microphone 
never worked has probably been due to missing correct USB kernel module snd-
usb-audio and muted mixer settings. After loading snd-usb-audio i could use 
the webcam microphone, though I sound like Mickey Mouse... but audio works now 
at least. I am sorry for making false hopes :-)
