Thanks, Paulo, both those commands produced video, the jpeg command produced a larger picture (though still smaller than the expected 640x480). I also managed to get video just a few minutes ago with xawtv. In all cases the colour was terribly brown. How can I get this video to show in Kopete and Skype? Kopete freezes when I go to the video configuration screen, and Skype shows a wavering green screen.
