I have a Ati xpert 128 video card, I loaded the proper server for it from
the xwindow site and also the installation cd(mandrake 6.1).
However both servers fail to display text correctly. Instead of text in the
menu's , I get these garbled bars that look like bar codes. This happens on
all the window managers. I checked the x start up with
$/ startx >errorlist 2>&1
all I can get out of it is that my system is looking for true font and
can't find it. So it removes the listing and continues.
Prior to installing the video card I used the S3trio chipset that came with
my mother board, it worked fine. But now that I've installed a video card,
my bios disabled the S3. I can still see the S3 in configuration files in
windows98, and in my /proc/pci entries.
Is there some way I can re-enable it as I can see the allocated ports and
Xconfigurator(came with dist.) sees it instead of the Ati set.
Or is there a way to get the text prob fixed? Right now I have to use
XF86Setup to configure X. xf86config doesn't work and Xconfigurator only
sees my old S3 stuff.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
