There was some discussion way back about using glibc2's iconv() to convert
character sets/EBCDIC or something. I don't remember much about the
discussion, but I do recall that it was something which a) someone couldn't
get to work properly, and b) iconv() isn't available on all systems, and c)
if we could get it to work, we could remove our character translation maps.
I just saw on freshmeat.net a project called `libiconv' which provides the
iconv() function for systems which are missing it. This means that if we
can get it to work properly, this might be extremely useful, not to mention
that it would make the emulator itself simpler.
What was the problem with not getting iconv() to work for us? Am I wrong on
any of my above points?
Note that libiconv doesn't support EBCDIC, but we can fix that :)
