If framebuffer support is desired, I might recommend using Mandrake 7.0
(it's in beta right now). It includes a special kernel-fb RPM and
framebuffer support can even be set up during installation. It'd be a quick
solution w/o having to recompile kernels anyway.

You could compile in framebuffer support - this defaults to a blinking box.

More realistically, you could use the control codes defined in
linux/Documentation/VGA-softcursor.txt.  For example:

     printf '\033[?6c'

to turn on a blinking block instead of a blinking underline.
