If you're running a current copy of tn5250 from CVS (0.16.1 is not new
enough, sorry...) you can set the xterm fonts in your ~/.tn5250rc file.

mysettings {
    env.DEVNAME = w3
    host = as400.whatever.com
    -underscores
    env.TERM=IBM-3477-FC
    font_80 = 9x15
    font_132 = fixed
}

then type:  
xt5250 mysettings
