This was the main point where I go stuck, although I also had a little
trouble with autoconf 2.50 here. This may be an issue with the Debian
package, though; when I copied configure.in to configure.ac, autoconf
worked fine.

I seem to have gotten it to update from an Edit Releases page.

It looks like it's automake that copies the files into the source
directory. The Debian automake package copies the files from the
Debian "autotools-dev" package, which has copies from CVS at:
http://subversions.gnu.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/config
It might be easier to download the Debian source package from:
http://packages.debian.org/autotools-dev
It should be enough to copy the latest versions into the top source
directory before running autogen.sh.

I _have_ seen some of the messages, and have been meaning to reply
once I get a bit of time and it's not so late at night.
Unfortunately, it seems to have gotten very late again, but I'll see
if I can catch up a bit more tomorrow night.
