Yes, this method works happily under lp5250d as well. If anyone is
interested in using lp5250d instead of lpr/lpd (I like lp5250d better)
Here's the .tn5250rc file I used:

env.DEVNAME=PDF
env.IBMMSGQNAME=DSP08
env.IBMMSGQLIB=*LIBL
outputcommand=scs2ascii|enscript --no-header -p- -q -fCourier-Bold@4/8 |
ps2pdf - /home/klemscot/lp5250d-pdf-$$.pdf
}
(That outputcommand is all one line, in case your mail client wraps it)
It's not nearly as fast as James' version, but it works well as is
searchable...
