i've been asked to teach a C++ class later this month where all of
the students will have their own windows laptops and there's still
some debate as to what they'll have to install to have a usable C++
development environment. and not surprisingly, i'd like to have
something equivalent on my linux system, so what options are there for
a dev env that works on both?

i can obviously install gnu gcc/g++ on windows with mingw, and for a
cross-platform IDE, it looks like i can use scite:

  http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html

unless i'm told the students will have visual studio. but are there
other alternatives i should look at if i have some input into this?
