Sorry for the delay in responding. They'll be needing help with the VM
setup on *Sunday*, January 4th. They didn't have a pre-canned VM image,
but Mike Kenzie built one that will fit on a cheap USB flash drive
(~2.3GB zipped). They'd still need to install VirtualBox and run any
updates, but that should be a lot faster than downloading N copies of
the entire Ubuntu install package at the same time.
