George,
Yes, contrary to the canned advice most Linux people give, one can often
use a winmodem in Linux. They are a little slower and use some
CPU/memory but many will work. I google "Winmodem Linux " and found
loads of useful info in addition to Linmodem.org
<http://www.linmodems.org/> . Here is an example:

"Linmodem-HOWTO" <http://walbran.org/sean/linux/linmodem-howto.html>

To see what chipset you have try using the Linmodem.org "scanModem tool
page" <http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/>

In my Dell with Linux I yanked the Dell Conexant-based winmodem because
it was harder to get working. I knew from OS/2 that the most widely
supported Winmodem chipset in Alt op sys's was the Lucent chipset. So I
put a Lucent-based modem in and SuSE 9.0 recognized it, installed the
driver and tested it during the install. I seldom go online in Linux (I
use eCS-OS/2 Warp 4.52 on this main system) but in an emergency or for
testing it is available and works fine. On this main workstation I have
an internal USR 2977-OEM hardware modem (cost ~$56.00) and usually have
my external USR hardware modem (bought at church sale for $3.00!) attached.
