Well, first thing you probably need to do is drop this concept of 
"versions".   You may have installed a particular release of 
Mandrake/Mandriva, but you update various pieces as they are released.

That is, you have a kernel.  This is your "Linux".   You are also likely 
running KDE for your GUI.  This may be important to you for the features 
it may support that you are interested in.

The concept that you have a certain "version" of whole system is an 
artificial one, that suits Microsoft well, so they can charge for fixing 
bugs and adding a few new bits and pieces.

So, you may have installed Mandrake 10.1, but have updated your kernel 
and everything else to current, and be pretty much running a Mandriva 
2005 system.   I don't know what you would call it, except for naming 
the pieces that are relevant.

I hope this doesn't confuse you too much, as I can tell you are new to 
the whole Linux "thing".  ;)
