Thanks for the tip, my SuSE Linux 7.1(2.4kernel) didn't recognize it also, but 
now it works! However, if I mount it as root only root has write access, and I 
can't change it with chmod 777 /mnt/myUSBdir . Also, how can I make automount 
as it does in e.g. Mandrake 10?
