The easiest way to go about this is to run an X configuration script.
If you're running X.org, there's a command called:

xorgconfig

Run that as root and follow all the steps to set up your configuration
file.  You'll need to know some data on your hardware, though, so be warned.

You could also try editing the file directly.  It's probably in
/etc/X11, and it would be called something like xorg.conf or something.
 Check out the monitor device section and the screens section.
