There will be some entries in your log files that should help narrow
the problem down.  I don't know which file X problems are logged to
since I don't use it, but it'll be something in /var/log.

If you find anything interesting in the log, you can search for it and
for other entries having to do with ATI, Radeon, and Gnome at
http://forums.gentoo.org.  The Gentoo forums are outstanding.  There's
also a Gentoo Radeon FAQ at
