You should be able to right click on the file and get an option to "extract to" this will extract or unzip if you will the individual files in the tar ball to the location of your chosing home, desktop or wherever. Once this is done most tars have a read me type file with installation instructions for that particular program. Hope this helps a bit. You can also read the man file for the tar command.
