Which history are we talking about, here?  Are you talking about the
Bash command history or the buffer showing all the text that was in the
window that you can scroll up and down?  If it's the latter, that always
gets cleared when you close the window.  If it's the former, that's a
Bash issue, not a terminal issue.  The GNOME terminal doesn't pay
attention to that at all.

As far as how you fix the Bash issue... no idea.  At least you may have
better success if you search for "bash history" rather than searching
for terminal issues.
