It should be fine, as long as you're willing to wait on it.  Also, the
interface will make a difference.  I probably wouldn't recommend USB
1.1, but USB 2.0 or Firewire shouldn't be too horrible.

Stable version?  It's all pretty stable, as long as you're not running
bleeding-edge software.  If you mean what distro is easiest for new
users, I'd suggest Fedora, SuSE or Ubuntu.  I only really have
experience with Fedora, however.  You might want to have a look at
www.distrowatch.org to get an idea of what's out there.
