For an older computer, I can't really recommend a lot of reasons to
switch, other than that the types of applications you use shouldn't
crash nearly as often as they do now. You mentioned that you use
Firefox; as far as I know, Firefox was originally written for Linux and
ported to Windows. As for Outlook, Evolution does pretty much the exact
same things (with the exception of virii-spreading - at a university I
attended some of the students referred to MS Outlook as "Microsoft Virus
And Worm Sharing Program". I use Evolution and I am very happy with it.
For an older computer, I would recommend Red Hat 9. It's not actively
supported anymore, but it should work, and if you need help, their
mailing list is pretty good. Red Hat 8 was my first Linux, although 9
is better in many regards and still runs well on old hardware. If you
have a CD burner, you can find ISOs of the install CDs. It's learning
curve is not too steep. My wife and I began our migration to Linux in
2003, and now we use it almost exclusively. My wife uses Windows for
games that she can't play on Linux (and that's only because I don't know
how to configure wine) and also because all her school assignments are
online and the school uses Windows and Microsoft is well known for not
playing well with others. Hope this helps.
