I would forget all about problems with RAM, bad CPUs, and focus on going
through the set with the startup command line to use basic video. Many
times, Linux installs have problems with higher end (especially newer)
video cards. Use real basic video for the install and let SuSE handle
the discover and install of ATI or Nvidea later towards the end of the
install.
One other questions, is the hard drive on a SATA bus? Newer Linux
kernels should recognize the SATA-based drive, but that could be an issue.
What does the openSuSE community forum say about install issues? That
would be the best place for answers to start with. You might also look
at the just released (this week, in fact) OpenSuSE 10.2 - might be a
barrel of fun!
