Check your configuration tools (try right clicking on the Desktop to 
bring it up) and see if the taskbar is configurable, and if one of the 
settings has made it hidden, or retracted to right or left or something.

Not all Windows Managers have taskbars.

If you are running FVWM or some other low-resource Windows Manager 
(popular with techies), you will have to use another Windows Manager, or 
Desktop Environment, like KDE and Gnome... if one is not already 
installed, but just not being used.

The command for changing Windows Managers on Red Hat is 'switchdesk'. I 
am not sure about Slackware, though.
