1: Don't top post. Reply _below_ the quoted text, and _trim_ the text to
the relevant bits.

2: Open a terminal window. At the prompt, type:

    thunderbird

If that fails, a useful error message may be printed.
If it succeeds, open another window and type:

    which thunderbird

The examine the icon properties and check it is running the right thing.
