Dave, 
RSDP (Root System Description Pointer) is the ACPI module in any 
Unice.. it sounds like maybe your system is too old for this (this 
is a blind guess type of system will better help with the 
diagnosis :-) ) Anyhow there are several boot options on any new 
(k)ubuntu boot disk, using acpi=off. 
Again though ... this is guessing that the system is "older"..
