All *nix-type systems complete the boot process by calling getty... the 
Login Prompt.

You can set an easy password, but you might regret it, particularly if 
you have sshd running, which will permit anyone on the Internet to run 
bruteforce dictionary attacks against your computer, when it is 
connected to the Internet.

Also, you never know when someone you trust will burn you, visiting your 
home when you are at work, and possibly cracking your bank accounts, or 
finding your porn collection, and showing it to your wife/girlfriend, or 
turning your computer into a spambot, and installing a keylogger, so 
they can read everything you type.

Passwords are a pretty good idea, in my opinion.
