I assume this will work on Ubuntu.
When you boot, you should be presented with the grub menu, their
selection of things to boot.
It should highlight the first one. Hit e as in edit.
This should show you a few lines. The middle one, as a rule, has the
word kernel in it. Get to that line with the arrow keys. Hit e again.
Now you should have that line on the screen. Hit ctl+e which should
take you to the end of the line. Type in
single
(or just the numeral one, i.e., 1)
This should boot you up in single user mode. You will get a console
screen instead of the usual graphical log on, and hopefully, if Ubuntu
works like some others, a # prompt.
At the prompt, if your user name was jim, type
passwd jim
This should enable you to set the password. You'll probably be asked to
confirm it as well.
When that's done, if you type
exit
It should then start to boot up normally. The new password should work.

Giles: Alright. I'll just jump into my time machine, go back to
the 12th century and ask the vampires to postpone their ancient
prophecy for a few days while you take in dinner and a show.
Buffy: Okay, at this point you're abusing sarcasm.
