Just want to offer a quick (possible) correction:

Shouldn't that be 'sudo mount -t ntfs ..." ??? Never heard of "cifs". o_O
Ubuntu may also support 'mount -t auto ...' which will autodetect the
partition type for you and mount it accordingly. A good catch-all
command ;) Check the command-line manual on your distro by typing:
man mount
and see what's available under the -t option.
