I think you would get comments about typing in all-caps on d*mn near any internet forum, with varying degrees of politeness. But welcome anyway. Certain hardware configurations don't work with default Linux boot parameters. If the LiveCD craps out as soon as it exits grub/lilo and tries to load the kernel, the first cheatcode I try is "nodma". The next most frequent cheatcode I use is "vga=788" to force 800x600x16 resolution on older machines. Some grub boot menus give you a text box to enter the code(s) in, others give you a command-prompt line where you have to type something like "linux nodma" (or "knoppix nodma" or "dsl nodma").
