Subject: [LINUX_Newbies] ubuntu instalation

I am trying to install the new version of ubuntu over my old

version 6.xxxxx and it won't work.... I have tried a regular install

and the oem install. In both I get to a point where I have to

"specify a partition for the root file system(mount point"/")." But

nowhere can I find anyplace to do so.

In looking at add and remove, I saw many things to encourage me to

keep trying, which I am doing.

Looked at gparted and found no solution. I just can't get past

specifying a root or file system step mount point or whatever.

You can upgrade any version of Ubuntu from Synatpic or apt-get. You just need
to check a box in either Synaptic or Adept to allow updates. You do not need to
use a new installation disk if you have a fast connection. You can just boot
your old Ubuntu and make the upgrade inside Ubuntu. This will not work if you
have a slow connection or have mangled your old installation.

You can choose to format and start again. I prefer this method. You do not have
to adjust your partitions unless you want to. To do this just boot the Ubuntu
CD and choose to install it to the same drive. When you come to the
partitioning part, it will check for previous versions and give you the option
to upgrade it. Otherwise you can manually choose the drive and reformat the
root drive. You can retain your home settings if they reside on separate
partitions. Just choose the same partition and choose not to format it.

It would be helpful to know a few things about your setup to be more helpful,
such as what partitions you have, whether you are choosing automatic or custom,
and what errors you are seeing.
