Hello Roy you wrote:

being on the leading edge. The distro is 7 or 8 months old and the

kernel was probably not a recent release to begin with. I hope that

they have improved in this respect, but I doubt it. When I last used

Xandros they still were using 2.4xx a year after most distros had been

using 2.6xx.

Thanks for taking the time to post. Have some information concerning

the version..... ... Went to Networks, clicked on help, as suggested by

xandros to get information about OS. Here's what I found Xandros

(build 2006 -06 -13 20:19 Rev 2.3)

Then went to Launch - Control Center for Linux Kernel Version

displayed as Release..... ..KDE version 3.4.2, Linux, Release -

2.6.18-doc-smp - machine i686 . I really don't know what to make of this??

is old and the hardware is new it is like using a computer that is

old. The distro cannot recognize something that as far as it knows

does not exist.

I purchased the Edition Summer of 2006. Had to reinstall several times

between Dec 2007 & Jan 2008. Downloaded & installed the new & upgrades

applications from their Network Manager as I went along. The Xandros

Printer Driver lists Epson CX8400 but does not work at all.

I would update the kernel and CUPS/Foomatic to the latest version in

your repositories and go from there.

I'm going to take your advice & see if I can update the Linux Kernel

First. Have been trying to get some answers & solutions from Xandros &

Various Forums but have run into a learning curve that is beyond me.

So this will be a challenge for this old senior newbie.

The Linux Kernel.org has a Kernel Update. As a newbie I'm presuming

that the Kernel Update is for all Linux Distros? Whether it be Ubuntu,

Debian, Xandros, Hardhat, Redneck, PClinos, etc. Just a thought?

Sounds promising. Thanks again. I'll try to post feedback as we go.

I would stick to the updates that are available through your repositories
unless you know what you are doing. You can recompile the kernel from scratch,
but it can mess you up if you don't know what you are doing. The kernel you
have isn't the latest, but it isn't that old. I would concentrate on CUPS and
Gutenprint.

Your printer is listed on the Gutenprint page.

http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3

This means that you should have the proper driver available to you as long as
you have CUPS properly installed, plus Foomatic. However, if Gutenprint is not
installed then you will have to do this yourself.

If Gutenprint is not listed in your repositories then you will have to install
it by compiling it yourself. Check the repositories first. If Gimp-print is
listed then it will be out of date. You want the more recent Gutenprint.

If you already have it installed then it may be just that the printer is not
installed. I am not that familiar with Xandros, so I will tell you how to do it
in KDE which is similar.

Look in your Menus for Printing, probably under System or even Utilities. Open
up the printers. You will get a box. It should say Add. Click on it. Click on
Add Printer or Class. You will get a box pop up. Click Next. Tick the box for
Local printer. Click Next. Does your printer show? This will only tell you if
it is being detected. If so then you are in luck. (Make sure you are connected
and the printer is on before doing this.)

Click on the printer name and the click Next. You will get a box similar to
what Windows gives with manufacturers' names on the left. Click on Epson. The
right hand box will show the models. Find the one that closest matches yours.
Continue through the process just clicking the defaults and then print a test
page when the dialog box allowing that pops up. If your exact model does not
appear then you are using a old drivers. A close match will still likely work.

There is a strong possibility that Xandros has its own print menu system. try
to use this as a guide to help you navigate as best you can. I do not have a
copy of Xandros to try.

If you need to manually install Gutenprint ask how to do this if you cannot
follow the instructions in the ReadMe file.

best of luck!
