If your distribution (whatever-4.0) covers the boot-up messages with a
splash screen, you can hit the key for "verbose mode" to watch it as
it happens, the exact key varies from distribution to distribution,
but is usually something like ESC, F1, ALT-F1, or CTRL-ALT-F1.
Assuming they don't tell you what the key is up front, most do. Also,
all bootup messages are saved in the system log for later review. Is
that more what you were asking?
