Hi Robert and everyone.

I was able to resolve this with help from ubuntuforums. First, I booted from 
the live CD, turned of the swap partition with 
sudo swapoff -a deleted the mepis partition and resized the ubuntu partition to 
use the whole of the drive (minus the swap partition of course).

I then followed the instructions at the following link: 
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows and, 
on reboot, verything worked perfectly.

It appears that it can be done.



Stage 1 Grub is on the MBR for your Primary HD, and it does contain 

embedded variables (like the pointer to Stage 2 that can be redefined 

w/o recompiling:

...so if you want to give it a try, it might work.



Then again, it might just be easier to reinstall.



If you do a successful hack, please document it and post it to list.
