Well, it's odd, because that's probably your local host. I don't
recollect seeing that one. Post the output of
cat /etc/hosts

Desktops tend to work better than laptops with Linux. Laptops often
have some hardware that isn't yet supported.

Not sure about that either, I would guess, but it's ONLY a guess, that
that is the only configuration that it considers possible.
You can try manually configuring /etc/X11/xorg.conf--there are tutorials
all over the place about that. However, Ubuntu is usually (though of
course, it's not perfect) pretty good at picking the best resolution.
I would guess it would only be able to set it lower rather than higher.
Again, that's just a guess.
