Actually I had the same problem when I put *ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10 on my
former Everex piece o' crap.....er....Cloudbook. Never did find out
exactly what it was but I am assumed it didn't like the VIA C7-M
processor. I tried re-installing, installing different variants of
ubuntu, nothing seemed to help. I am wondering if it had a bad RAM chip.
I didn't keep it long enough to check that out. I run 8.04 on all of my
desktops, wife's laptop, server, and the Cloudbook's replacement, my new
Aspire One, all run perfectly find minus odd problem of Wife's laptop
loosing flash audio.

****** I would run memtest86+ (should be a grub option upon boot up) and
see if you have a bad memory chip. I have seen symptoms like this from
defective memory before.

As for specs the *buntu's can run on pretty lean specs. My oldest 2
machines one a Dell r450 runs Xubuntu 8.04 (guest system & printserver),
P-II 450mhz/256MB/13GB HD

The Wife's Toshiba Satellite 1735 w/ Ubuntu 8.04/P-III 750/192MB/16GB HD.
