How simple do you want this?  For Linux, I would suggest Mint.  For
me it is the easiest to set up and recognizes more hardware than
anything else I have found.  I am experimenting with VirtualBox
under Mint.  VirtualBox allows you to run another OS completely 
within the host OS.  Like you, I set up XP under VirtualBox.  That
should cure your "doesn't recognize my hard drive" problem as Vbox
tells XP that it is a generic hard drive and XP has no problem with
it.  Just my $.02 worth.
