Linux keeps a "system log" of bootup messages.   If you could find
that (I don't use *buntu, I only know how to find it on other distros)
and share with us the text of those messages, someone might be able to
help you.   You might also want to, if you haven't already, take this
question to the Ubuntu community forums, or a place like
LinuxQuestions.org that has an Ubuntu-specific section.

Sometimes you have to hunt for and download "nonfree" drivers for
NVIDIA graphics cards.

Most network and systems admins I know swear by CentOS (which is Red
Hat Enterprise Linux with the serial numbers filed off), but they're
old-school.
