I am replying more to the original posting which somehow I missed. I do not
know his distro so I will respond as Ubuntu handles it.

Linux is the kernel and not an operating system. You cannot generalize and
compare Linux with Windows. All distros handle updates differently. Ubuntu for
example uses Adept which loads an icon in the system tray and you can set the
level of updates in the Preferences when you Right-Click. The icon changes
colour depending on the level of update. Hovering on it tells you the number
of updates. Clicking on it opens Adept and tells you what the updates are and
you can uncheck any boxes that you want. You set the levels by Right-clicking
and choosing Preferences. You can shut off updates altogether, have them
install security updates in the background or even update everything. It is
very user centered.

In comparing Linux to Windows the poster does a disservice to Linux. Updates in
Linux are discreet and at no time are you nagged or told to re-boot every ten
minutes. This is the case with whatever distro you care to try.

Heh, that's because you're too elite. :) It's an Ubuntu thing. (Maybe
Gnome, I don't know.)

Clicking on the button should show you a list of updates with the option
to select all, some, or none.
