For me it was always just because it was all I needed. Horses for courses you know? One day that I was really impressed with Linux was when I fired up emacs off Tom's RTBT floppy distro. I was like how'd he get an entire OS and emacs onto a single floppy disk? He cheated of course, but still! Amazing what can still be accomplished even relegated to the console.
