What are the specific problems you're having getting connected?

Are you using wireless or wired connection?

Is the network device detected?

Have you tried running from your boot media to see if the network is visible?

It may be worth your while to attempt another distro.

I've noted that on my Presario V6000 laptop that (K)Ubuntu doesn't detect all
the hardware and requires additional drivers. However, using PCLinuxOS allows
me to use everything right after installation.

You mention using Ubuntu. Are you using the desktop or the netbook edition?

Ubuntu does have an option for Additional Drivers under the System,
Administration option. Have you checked whether additional drivers are
available for your hardware? If there are additional drivers you will likely
need to download and install them to get all your hardware running.

The above will help others figure out what could be the source of your issue.
