Hi William, the Ubuntu distribution is very intuitive. During instalation, you can choose how Ubuntu will work with your Window XP. The Ubuntu instructions are very useful. Furthermore, you can redimensionate your partition(s) with some clicks and you can copy your "WindowsXP Profile" to your "Ubuntu Profile". All this, without lose your files or without damage your WindowsXP partition during instalation. However, I always recomend do a backup (your XP files) before a Linux instalation.
