When I did Ubuntu 10.10 it asked if I wanted to add the Mp3 stuff. Otherwise, you can add them: Under System>Administration>Synaptic>Meta Packages (multiverse)>ubuntu-restricted-extras Under Multimedia (multiverse) I see Alsa-firmware-loaders, but you'll have to see which sound card is built on your motherboard for that. Others can advice you on which System Info program is best for them to help you further.
